I was with an American the other day who is new here and just visiting, and a woman was nursing her baby when we approached her near the post office. She disconnected the kid, swung him onto her back, and started soliciting us....all with the left breast hanging there, staring at me, taunting me, as if it were aware of my blog entry.

Even better was the look on my companion's face; his eye was twitching and despite biting his lower lip you could still see a smile desperately trying to creep through. Of course, I told her that he needed to buy a lot of things for his wife and girlfriend back in the states, and left him there.

My husband (Guatemalan) and I were out in the street in front of the house last night when one of the neighbors came over to talk to him. The teenage girl and my husband carried on their conversation as her son walked over. She casually picked him up, took out her breast to feed and didn't attempt to cover herself in anyway. No interuption of the conversation and not a blink of the eye from my husband. It was perfectly normal for them both. You'd think that I'd get use to it after several years here but no.

Excellent. I am moving to Guatemala from China with my 8 month old daughter who I am still breastfeeding. The Chinese women seem to be all for formula and locals like to stop and watch me breastfeed despite breast and baby being covered up with a muslin. Look forward ro whipping it out!

Great points. With few exceptions, the women here are very modest, something I appreciate as I have teenage sons.

Modesty is relative. We walk around in shorts showing our legs but gawk at exposed breasts, and people here think nothing of a breast but consider a woman to be fast or indecent if she shows her legs.
