Independence Day & El Buen Rey Marco
ByToday my countrymen celebrate American Independence from Britain. A lot could be said but I will limit my comment to quoting Benjamin Franklin who, at the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, responded to a questioner who had inquired as to the form of government America was to have now and said, “A republic…if you can keep it.” (Yes, I know we are celebrating the Declaration of Independence and not the Constitution, but that’s the quote I wanted to use).
……………………….
My family and I will be commemorating the birthday of our homeland today with a lot of food, drink and maybe some movies. At sundown we’re going to sing the National Anthem (or possibly Dixie), and shoot fireworks at the homes of friends of ours who still swear allegiance to The Crown. We’ll see who has a sense of humour and who doesn’t…
Bloggers are supposed to share silly little things from their personal life as a means of endearing themselves to readers, and readers are supposed to post back with their own plans.
Here are the movies nominated by the boys in the house:
Gods & Generals
Patton
Godfather
Dirty Dozen
Rocky
Patriot
Midway
Tombstone
Saving Private Ryan
The girls of the house have nominated:
Pride & Prejudice
Terms of Endearment
Sense & Sensibility
Ann of Green Gables/Avonlea
Life is Beautiful
English Patient
High School Musical
We use a parliamentary system of voting, and therefore the girls thought they would nominate fewer movies and compensate for their fewer numbers by voting for their movies and no others. Fortunately there are more danglers than not so we will be watching: Patton, Rocky and Gods & Generals.
Update: Since my family is not a republic but instead a benevolent monarchy, and because as monarch I have domestic peace and tranquility foremost among my priorities, I have overruled the popular vote and replaced ‘Rocky’ with the top vote-getter among the females, ‘Sense and Sensibility’.

Happy 233rd Birthday USA – Enjoy your weekend Mark, a friend of mine had a small part in ‘Gods & Generals’…some of it filmed not too far from my current location this 4th of July (Washington DC). Also riding the Harley this weekend while the weather cooperates – plenty of history to enjoy on the roads of Virginia.
salud!

Off to a great start 1-0; dinner, drinks and cigar last night at Panza Verde, friends coming over today to grill out, and the weather here could not be better. It’s sunny and 70 with a light breeze and clear skies!

Can’t really imagine sitting down and trying to watch Pride & Prejudice or Patton, although the latter would be okay in an environment not riddled with hyperactive younger people… What really excites me is the prospect of shooting fireworks at Brits– I really hope you actually are going to do this…
Currently I am celebrating the American ideal by clocking time and a half at my shit job while wearing (unplanned) a Gettysburg t-shirt given to me by my dad… After work I will go home and try to work my other, mostly unpaid job, then study some French… If I’m not dead on my feet after all that I might watch some sort of Japanese movie that borders on pornography or sanity, depending…
Viva la Revolucion!

Mark,
Congrats on YOUR version of Independence!
And do you mean to tell me that the “non-danglers” will actually sit through “Patton” & “Gods & Generals”?
Best!
Tom

Brendan: We started the fireworks at the local Brit’s house at midnight, then again at 6am and noon. He finally called this afternoon, saying, “Dude, WTF?!” I had to remind him of the occasion, upon which he replied, “Okay…just watch out for my jeep.”
Tonga: The movie-watching will be segregated.

We grilled, drank beer and wine, saw old friends and blew up a few boxes of fireworks. Home by midnight. Never saw any Brits to shoot bottle rockets at, maybe next year.

Funny. Brought back memories. My daughters used to watch Anne of the Green Gables series again and again and again … and force their baby brother to watch, as well! The tyranny of the majority, of course.
