Who Would You Vote For?
ByPresident Colom is less than a year into his term but like Obama his popularity is not what it once was. As a result I thought I would commission a new poll, one looking out to the next Presidential elections. You can find that in the column to the right, below the ads for my friends.
Whether you’re a US citizen, a Guatemalan citizen or not registered, it doesn’t matter. However, for you Democrats, one little wrinkle: in this election you can only vote once.

Being a US citizen, I can't vote in Guatemala and frankly, would not be interested in voting here if I could, because sadly most governments–even if they start with good intentions–end up tremendously corrupt. Nevertheless, I would vote for whatever candidate would be less likely to return to repressive militaristic strategies and imperatives. Which is still delusional, since the military still pretty much rules here and I seriously doubt any government, regardless of ideology, can get rid of it anytime soon.
One problem (of many) in the US is that there are only two parties, which sort of monopolize access to new ideas. I would like to see candidates from Libertarian and Socialist parties represented at presidential debates, for example. Why not? Take good ideas from whichever camp. At least give them the same air time as the other parties get. But the way things are structured, there isn't much electoral selection. One thing for sure, no president (regardless of ideology) retains his "honeymoon" status with the public for long. Reality has a way of spoiling the idyll. C'est la vie.

I feel we need to get Jimmy Carter involved down here. There are too many votes for Don Marco. Someone is stuffing the ballot box.

Every knows it, but no one is going to say it. Don Marco would be a better president than the others in the list solely for the fact that he's not from Guatemala, is not indigenous, is not poorly skinned, he speaks absolutely no Spanish, nor has any other similar faults nor any love for the Guatemalan people that would affect his decision-making.

James, between you and Juan3 I got a great laugh. In reality I'm holding out for 'King'; for starters I think it better suits my temperament and secondly, how in the world would you ever get anything done otherwise?

Not Colom, that is for sure. I just saw a picture of him in
Nuestro Diario where he was yukking it up with Manuel Zelaya, and that's enough to convince me that he is a commie no-goodnik Chavista. So I think I would go with Molina–is he the guy who was Colom's chief opponent?–the 'mano dura' guy?

I would vote for Efrain Rios Montt. Guatemala needs a good cleaning. Like it or not, Rios Montt acted out of conviction and not corruption. Any man who executes criminals (by firing squad), in spite of a Papal visit and request for clemency, is my hero.

I have to agree with Trudy. More parties are needed, not just the one’s who could buy more airtime. All parties should get equal time. I spoke to a lot of people during the presidential election here in the U.S. back in November & no one knew who Congressman Dennis Kucinich was. I told them that he was running for President! What channel was he on? As for the candidates that Mark posted up, two of them just make me throw up! Otto Perez Molina & Rios Mott they have too much blood in there hands…

Rios Montt massacred whole villages and made whole villages disappear it was an ethnic cleansing it was some of the worst times in Guatemala he should be prosecuted and killed for acts of violence against humanity
