Most Notorious Blog in Guatemala
ByI was in RumBar the other night so the Wife could have quesadillas and a brownie with ice cream on top when the couple sitting next to us asked if I was, “The Don Marco”. They didn’t look dangerous so I answered in the affirmative, to which the attractive lady said, “Wow, you’re famous! We’re here because of you!”
I assumed she meant RumBar, which as readers know I unabashedly promote (and with good reason), so I said, “Oh, you heard about RumBar from my blog?”.
Her response surprised me. She said, “No, we’re in Guatemala because of you…we were going to visit Costa Rica when someone sent us a link to your blog…once we started reading we couldn’t stop, and stayed up all night reading about your adventures. Your honesty convinced us to come here instead and so far we love it.”
A ‘friend’ of mine had overheard the entire exchange and, rolling his eyes he mumbled just loud enough for me to hear, “I don’t know about famous…but definitely notorious”. I found it fascinating that people would read a blog that is supposedly so full of hate/contempt/disdain for a nation and find it an attractive destination. Hmm, maybe we’re on to something here…
Yesterday I was in the capital and stopped by GuateFriends to say hello to Joe and Ana and there was a guest in the salon who said precisely the same thing; he’s from Idaho and is looking for a place to live the six months of the year that nothing lives in Idaho and found GuateLiving, read for a night or two and then got on an airplane. When he said that he chose GuateFriends because I recommended them I hoped Joe might at least offer me some Zacapa, but that didn’t happen.
Anyway, I thought perhaps the blog traffic had picked up so I checked the Google Analytics stats for October and can’t believe how many readers there are. Thanks for reading and if you’re in RumBar/BistroCinq/Nokiate/Papa Zitos sometime and see a stunning specimen of a male gringo in the bar with an illegal cigar, don’t be shy, come over and introduce yourself! I promise I don’t bite…most of the time.

Go to the keywords tab. Check that out, "Zacapa" is moving up in the ranking of terms to find your blog. Make sure to get some sort of arrangement with la Licorera Zacapaneca…

Cubans are perfectly legal in Guatemala. What sort of illegal cigar might you be smoking?

I have never used the word hate to describe your comments. Contempt and disdain yes. I just call it the way I see it. I don't think you're a bad guy, and there seems to be a kind heart underneath a misanthropic conservative coating. Nevertheless, I will continue to challange your more obnoxious statements. I am thankful to you for making me analyze my own political correctness.

You can find a cheaper place but not one that is cleaner or more secure for the price. They also have a great hidden terrace, so check it out.

Public places–like on the street or in the park or in a bar or a hotel lobby? No one ever told me that.

They're legal to possess, but not to smoke, at least in public places.

I, too, enjoyed reading your blog before moving here and still enjoy it afterwards. I still have alot to learn and so I love finding out more about things that I have no clue about. I'm starting a personal blog and just wrote my first post if you'd care to read it: http://guatemom-marji.blogspot.com/2010/07/our-tr...
