Seen In My Neighborhood This Morning

By Mark

Readers may have noticed that I took a few days off since the last post, the first time I’ve not blogged for more than a day since I began.  It’s not a good idea to speak or write when you’re angry, and I got more than one email concerned that I might be developing an unjustified anger towards ALL Chapines.  Not to worry, but I did decide to take a break.  This morning I was browsing my draft posts to see what might be nice to post today when I received some intel you won’t believe…

A kid was spotted doing some recon in our area and in his hand was-you guessed it-a slingshot.

Unfortunately, by the time the report arrived it was too late to send in the cavalry, armed with the lightsabers they got for Christmas that, with blades of painted copper and handles of painted aluminum pipe, could be interesting.

Stay tuned.

Gotta say this: I told you so. This kid is probably the local Ted Bundy in training. I wouldn't be surprised if he's hit other neighbors, cats, dogs and birds also. It is far from being a matter of race: it's more a question of whether or not he gets away with it. He probably thinks that a gringo dad will not go crazy like a Guatemalan one and slap the @$#& out of him.
This reminds me of a scene from "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle". THe nanny threatens a kid that's been bothering one of the kids she's looking after. Love that scene!!!

Oy vey. I was wondering. Still, it might be a coincidence, so be careful. If it isn't a coincidence, that kid needs his parents to throw the book at him. Were it my kid, he'd be getting hell when I found out what he'd been up to. Well, best go to bed, just came back from a lively reggae concert and at my age …

If you've ever had fantasies of paramilitary recon now is the time to live it up. Shelter on the roof, radio contact with the boys, nocturnal patrols. I'm actually reliving "The 'Burbs" in my head right now, and I would encourage you to do it in real life for all of us.

move out from that neighborhood…i have lived 26 years in Guatemala and now we been in antigua for 3 years and move 7 times, it has been hard to find the perfect place but if you are not happy move on until you find it. Guatemala's culture is very rich and has lots of diversity, its just a matter of time you get to know it and know which way to point to avoid getting in trouble and always try looking at the positive things this beautiful land of eternal spring has to offer and all the opportunities we still have.
