Since I began writing on GuateLiving I’ve been invited on more than one occasion to submit an article to La Cuadra, Antigua’s local left-wing publication (now available online as well). Not getting the joke, I submitted articles and naively thought that the editors might, for the first time in their three-year history, include a different perspective as a belated acknowledgment of the claim on the front of the magazine that La Cuadra offers ‘argument’.
Ironically, I was sitting in Cafe No Se (owned by the same folks who publish La Cuadra), when an acquaintance pointed out that my work had as much chance of being printed in La Cuadra as it would in Pravda. I happened at that very moment to be reading the publisher’s recent edition bemoaning the anguish editors go through each month trying to come up with something-anything-to fill the space between advertisements.
For a moment my feelings were hurt, until I realized that daily readership on GuateLiving exceeds the total monthly circulation of La Cuadra. That’s when I decided to create a page on GuateLiving called, “Stuff You Won’t Find In La Cuadra”, which is far too long for the description portion of Wordpress’s page fields, hence the abbreviated title.
BTW, I do enjoy reading La Cuadra and much of the work is by writers far more talented than I, but if you tire of the liberal self-indulgence or just want something not from the Communist Manifesto, read on.
